In a stunning move that has left many conservatives reeling, a group of six Republicans has teamed up with Democrats to support a pre-election pledge that aims to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election—without fully addressing ongoing concerns about voter integrity. The “Unity Commitment,” spearheaded by Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), has already been signed by more than 30 members of Congress, including these six GOP representatives.
The six Republicans who sided with Democrats in this bipartisan push are Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Mike Lawler (R-NY), Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR), Nick LaLota (R-NY), and Anthony D’Esposito (R-NY). All are vying for reelection in districts that supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, according to a report by The Washington Examiner. These Republican lawmakers, who are now being labeled as “RINOs” (Republicans In Name Only) by critics, are facing backlash from their own party for supporting a measure that many conservatives believe undermines the integrity of future elections.

The pledge’s central goal is to commit to accepting the certified election results after all legal challenges have been resolved, regardless of any concerns surrounding voter fraud. This has sparked outrage among many Republicans who feel the pledge dismisses the legitimate worries about election integrity, especially after the controversies surrounding the 2020 presidential election. “Once the 2024 presidential election is over – and all legal means to challenge election results in the courts have been exhausted – I will safeguard the fairness and integrity of America’s democratic process by: Acknowledging the election winner certified at the joint meeting of Congress in January 2025 as the legitimate President of the United States,” reads part of the pledge.
