The shift in Luzerne County mirrors a broader trend of rural and suburban areas in Pennsylvania increasingly favoring the Republican Party. The county’s transition is also significant because Pennsylvania has been a key focus for national politics, particularly in presidential elections. The last time Republicans held a majority in Luzerne County was during the 1972 presidential election when voters favored Richard Nixon in his landslide victory over Democratic candidate Sen. George McGovern (D-SD). But by 1976, after the Watergate scandal and Nixon’s resignation, Democrats regained control of the county, and the Republican Party has not held a majority there since—until now.
