After more than four decades of loyalty to the Democratic Party, former Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva is making a bold move. In a fiery announcement during a recent event, Villanueva declared he is cutting ties with the left and joining the Republican Party.
“As of today, I’m leaving the party of paid protests, purple hair, and pronouns, and joining the party of faith, family, and freedom,” Villanueva told the crowd, drawing loud applause.

Villanueva, who took office as L.A. County Sheriff in 2018, gained a reputation for challenging the status quo. Though he initially ran as a Democrat, his time in office often put him at odds with liberal policies, especially those concerning public safety and law enforcement. His tough-on-crime stance and public criticisms of the Black Lives Matter movement made him a frequent target of progressive outrage, ultimately contributing to his narrow loss in the 2022 election to Robert Luna, the former Long Beach Police Chief.
