Deobra Redden, a violent three-time criminal, savagely attacked District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus in her own courtroom. The startling event happened during a sentencing hearing when Judge Holthus boldly declined to give Redden probation.
After his sentence was denied, a man attacks the judge. Redden, 30, was accused of trying to cause serious injury by violence. But when the judge rejected his appeal for probation, he jumped over the bench and attacked her, causing mayhem to break out.

Judge Holthus just avoids injury in an unexpected onslaught. She reportedly struck her head, but she is doing OK. 8 News Now verifies that a worse consequence is avoided thanks to her quick response and the court staff’s timely action.
In October, Redden, a violent prior criminal and serial offender, was deemed mentally fit. His long criminal history includes violent crimes, disobedience of court orders, and an unsettling pattern of non-compliance. Redden is now facing additional accusations after being accused of attacking both an ordinary person and a protected person, adding to his long list of legal troubles.
“Thank God the judge is okay,” Steve Wolfson, the district attorney for Clark County, stated. “Thank God for the heroic efforts of those who came to her aid, especially her marshal and her law clerk. Without them, the situation would have been much worse as this defendant exhibited extremely violent behavior and I’m confident there will be consequences.”
Former district attorney Holthus was elected to the bench in 2018 and will continue to serve in that capacity.
