In a stunning rebuke to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), three members of the Senate Democratic caucus sided with Republicans on Tuesday in support of a House GOP bill designed to keep the government funded through November 21. Their defection exposed a growing divide inside the Democratic Party over how far they are willing to go in their war against President Donald Trump.
Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), John Fetterman (D-PA), and Angus King (I-ME) crossed party lines to back the measure. King is officially an independent but almost always votes with Democrats.
The bill ultimately failed in a 55-45 vote because it needed 60 votes to advance. But the fact that multiple Democrats joined the GOP rattled Schumer’s leadership and set the stage for another high-stakes showdown.
