For years, Americans have heard that a four-year college degree is the traditional ticket to a successful career. But as the country faces a growing shortage of electricians, technicians, builders and other skilled workers, one of America’s biggest technology companies is betting on a different path.
Google has announced a new initiative designed to help 25,000 veterans and military family members build careers in the skilled trades.
The effort is being backed by Google.org and will work with three organizations that specialize in serving the military community: Hiring Our Heroes, Student Veterans of America and the Home Builders Institute. The programs will offer pre-apprenticeships, career coaching and connections to employment opportunities.
And Google is putting a familiar face at the center of the announcement.
