In a stunning 4-3 decision this week, the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned a pro-life law that had stood for nearly two centuries, ruling that the state’s 1849 abortion ban is no longer enforceable. The court’s move, driven by its new liberal majority, now throws the door wide open for expanded abortion access in a state once known for strong protections for the unborn.
The deciding vote came from none other than Justice Janet Protasiewicz, a left-wing judge elected in an April 2023 election — a race many conservatives failed to prioritize. Her win gave the liberal bloc control of the court and marked a clear turning point in Wisconsin’s judicial direction.
Though state justices are technically “nonpartisan,” voters weren’t fooled. Protasiewicz ran an openly progressive campaign centered on abortion access and LGBT issues. Her campaign was backed by a tidal wave of cash — over $42 million was dumped into the race, the vast majority coming from Democrat-aligned donors and groups.
And it didn’t stop there. Just two years later, in 2025, another seat was up for grabs — and another $100 million was spent, making it the most expensive judicial election in U.S. history. Conservatives like Elon Musk tried to help level the field with donations, but the radical left once again outspent and outmobilized their opposition. Justice Susan Crawford, elected in that race, is expected to further cement the liberal majority when she’s sworn in this August.
