Burke’s conviction is all the more significant because of his powerful political position. He was widely regarded as a kingmaker in the city and was well-known for being a cunning political operator. Burke’s attempt to defraud the Field Museum of money and influence commerce for his own benefit has come to light. Furthermore, he tried to intimidate the proprietors of a Burger King in his 14th Ward into transferring tax appeal cases to his legal practice. The prosecution’s main argument centers on this misbehavior, with special attention paid to the Old Post Office.

Burke’s conviction for misusing his influence to force the developers of the Old Post Office to hire his legal practice has been upheld. Former alderman Danny Solis recorded multiple conversations in which Burke revealed his illegal scheme while posing as an informant.

“Burke has his hand out for money. He tied the giving of official action by him to the giving of money in 3 different corrupt episodes,” US Attorney Morris Pasqual said.

Burke perched his chin on his neatly folded hands as he listened to the verdict, as reported by ABC7 Chicago. His head was bowed as his family, which included his wife Anne, their two daughters, and other relatives, sat behind him. Burke grimaced deeply and nodded solemnly as each juror announced their verdict.

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement, “With this jury’s verdict, Ed Burke should rightfully be remembered as a man who elevated personal ambition and greed over doing the people’s work.”

“Along the way, Burke has had many, many enablers: the pernicious practice of aldermanic prerogative which, despite efforts to eliminate it, persists to this day, especially in zoning and development decisions. The other elected officials who, over the years, looked the other way as Burke systematically monetized the Finance Committee for his own personal benefit. And the party who gave Burke control over judicial nominations, so that decades of jurists became beholden to him.”

But like many others who have relished their excessive power in the past, Burke’s belief in his invincibility as a result of a total lack of accountability ultimately proved to be his downfall. He made a serious error by overestimating his abilities foolishly.

She finished, “Only time will tell if the lessons of Ed Burke’s ascent and spectacular fall will lead to desperately needed reforms begun, but not nearly finished, around transparency and accountability. But meanwhile, with this verdict, rendered by a jury of his peers, the tyranny of Ed Burke is over. I like to think somewhere, Harold is smiling.”
