New York City’s newly elected socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, wasted no time stirring controversy this week — issuing a direct warning to federal immigration officers and signaling that his administration plans to defy federal immigration enforcement in the nation’s largest city.
During remarks about his transition to City Hall, the 34-year-old Democratic Socialist made headlines when he told reporters that federal immigration agents wouldn’t be exempt from scrutiny under his leadership. “My message to ICE agents, and to everyone across this city, is that everyone will be held to the same standard of the law. If you violate the law, you must be held accountable,” Mamdani said, according to Newsweek.
Mamdani went on to accuse federal agents of acting above the law. “There’s sadly a sense that is growing across this country that certain people are allowed to violate the law whether that be the president or agents themselves,” he continued. “What New Yorkers are looking for is an era of consistency, an era of clarity, and an era of conviction. And that’s what we will deliver to them.”
His remarks, delivered at a press event introducing his transition team, mark a clear warning shot at federal immigration enforcement ahead of his January 1, 2026, inauguration. Mamdani, a far-left progressive and outspoken critic of ICE, made it clear that his City Hall would take an aggressive stance against cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
