A night of reckless speed turned into one of Florida’s worst street-racing tragedies when a 22-year-old driver plowed through a crowd outside a popular Tampa bar, killing four people and injuring more than a dozen others.
Authorities say the deadly chaos began when Florida Highway Patrol troopers spotted a speeding sedan and attempted to pull it over. The driver, later identified as Silas Sampson of Tampa, refused to stop, launching into a high-speed chase that tore through the city’s streets.
A Pursuit Gone Wrong
Troopers tried to end the chase using a precision immobilization technique — a maneuver designed to spin out and safely stop fleeing vehicles. But the attempt failed, and Sampson’s car kept barreling toward downtown Tampa at alarming speeds. As the pursuit entered more crowded areas, officers made the difficult decision to back off to avoid further endangering the public.
