According to The Post Millennial, the State of Illinois has decided to permit non-citizens, such as DACA applicants, to work as police officers. With the passage of House Bill 3751, Governor J.B. Pritzker declared, “We have the ability for people who are legally here in this country, and permanent residents and DACA residents, to apply for jobs as police officers.” Children who were brought into the country illegally by their parents while still minors are known as DACA residents.
The law permitted “an individual who is not a citizen but is legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law is authorized to apply for the position of police officer, subject to all requirements and limitations, other than citizenship, to which other applicants are subject.” However, the noncitizen who is applying to be a police officer needs to be authorized by federal law to own and acquire a handgun.
Although The Post Millennial claims as much “federal law prohibits non-US citizens from serving as police officers and deputies,”, Police 1 classifies the criteria for the position of police officer as variable “from state to state and even agency to agency.” It also observed that “most departments look for these minimum qualifications in their applicant pools.” These basic qualifications included the statement that “[t]he applicant is a citizen of the United States.”
For instance, the employment criteria for the UCLA police department “[a] citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship and will be a US citizen at time of appointment (resident aliens are eligible if they have applied for citizenship at least one year prior to taking the written test).”
The federal law described by The Post Millennial may not be completely followed by local police units. However, among conservative circles, this story is still making waves. Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL) shared her opinions on the subject. “At 5pm yesterday, when no one was paying attention, Pritzker signed a bill to allow illegal immigrants to become police officers, giving non-citizens the power to arrest citizens in our state. No sane state would allow foreign nationals to arrest their citizens, this is madness!”
Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado said “In the state of Illinois, illegals can now become police officers. Yes, you heard that right. People who are breaking the law by their presence here can now arrest American citizens. You know the other blue states are watching and getting ready to implement this idea as soon as they can! We either address this border crisis or allow our country to descend further into a Leftist dystopia.”

The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police opposes the measure because it sends the wrong message and provides those who are not citizens the power to police the law.
According to Fox News, the Illinois police are now dealing with severe recruitment difficulties and shortages, which emphasizes the significance of this bill.
