The California legislature recognized Michael Williams, commonly known as “Sister Roma,” a well-known Bay Area drag performer, during Pride month events at the state Capitol. However, the action has sparked criticism from Republican lawmakers. Williams is a member of the “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” organization, which has in the past generated controversy.
Williams received an invitation to visit the Capitol on Monday from Democratic senators from California. “It’s unfortunate that my Republican colleagues decided to make it an issue of my honoring Sister Roma,” Senator Scott Wiener of the far left remarked. “Sister Roma is one of the very best community leaders in San Francisco. She does amazing work, as do the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in general.”
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who dress as nuns, openly parody Catholic symbols, including a sexualized depiction of the crucifixion.
A group connected in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ impending Pride Night marketing was the subject of controversy. Left-wing activists were first refused entry, but after resistance, the team reversed their decision and went above and beyond to honor the group.
MLB players and Catholics are both shunning the Dodgers organization in protest of their latest decision.
Democrats were encouraged to cancel the invitation after Republicans in the California assembly denounced the choice to honor Williams. “The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, through their public disparagement of the Catholic Faith, have displayed a disregard for the principles of tolerance and understanding that should guide our society. Honoring them in the Senate Chambers would be inappropriate and contrary to the values we hold dear,” GOP state senators requested Toni Atkins, the leader of the Senate, to revoke the invitation in a letter last week.
Atkins rejected the demand, stating “in the end, faith is stronger than any parody could possibly be.”
