Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has ignited another political firestorm after declaring that imprisoning violent criminals is not only ineffective but also “racist,” “immoral,” and even “unholy.” His remarks, delivered during a joint press conference with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, have left many residents stunned—especially those living in the city’s hardest-hit neighborhoods where violent crime has become a daily battle.
During the event, Johnson dismissed one of society’s most basic tools for public safety: incarceration. He insisted that traditional law-and-order approaches are outdated and discriminatory.
“We cannot incarcerate our way out of violence,” he exclaimed.
Johnson doubled down, claiming the prison system has failed America and has only led to mass imprisonment without ending crime.
”We have already tried that, and we have ended up with the largest prison population in the world, without solving the problems of crime and violence.”
The mayor went even further, accusing the country of being addicted to locking people up.
”The addiction on jails and incarceration in this country, we have moved past that.”
