Former Rahm Emanuel is sounding the alarm on his own party—and his message is one many Democrats may not want to hear. In a striking critique, Emanuel admitted that the Democratic Party has veered off course, abandoning the everyday concerns that once made it the political home of working Americans.
During a recent appearance on the “Fifth Column” podcast, Emanuel didn’t hold back. He argued that Democrats have spent years talking down to voters while prioritizing divisive cultural battles over practical solutions. The result, he suggested, is a party increasingly disconnected from the people it claims to represent.
“We lost the plot,” Emanuel said bluntly. “We as Democrats nationally, from ‘Latinx,’ to defunding the police, to ‘Police organizations are all racist,’ to bringing a set of cultural wars to our schools. We are on the losing side of those cultural wars. Full stop.”
Emanuel’s critique zeroed in on what many Americans see every day—declining education outcomes. He pointed to struggling classrooms as a glaring example of misplaced priorities, arguing that political energy has been diverted away from core issues like student achievement.
