Donald Trump didn’t hold back when he saw Britain’s latest move involving a critical military base. The former President unloaded on Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the UK’s plan to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a decision Trump called outright reckless.
“Great stupidity,” Trump declared in a Truth Social post Tuesday morning, directly criticizing Starmer’s government for surrendering control of the remote Indian Ocean archipelago, home to Diego Garcia, one of the most strategically vital joint US-UK military bases in the world.
The Labour government’s deal, signed in May 2025, officially transfers sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius. Diego Garcia, however, will still be leased back to Britain for 99 years, with the UK paying billions in the process. Trump dismissed the arrangement as weak and unnecessary.
Trump warned the move hasn’t gone unnoticed by global adversaries. “There is no doubt that China and Russia have noticed this act of total weakness,” he said. “These are international powers who only recognize strength, which is why America under my leadership is now respected like never before after only one year back in office.”
