President Donald Trump signaled on Friday that he is prepared to step in and fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — but only under lawful direction — after a federal judge ordered the government to tap into emergency reserves to keep food aid flowing during the ongoing shutdown.
As the government closure drags into another month, millions of families were bracing for their food stamp benefits to run dry by Saturday. Until now, Trump officials had resisted using the emergency fund without clear legal backing — a decision that drew both outrage and political pressure from Democrats eager to blame the administration for the lapse.
“Our Government lawyers do not think we have the legal authority to pay SNAP with certain monies we have available, and now two Courts have issued conflicting opinions on what we can and cannot do,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“I do NOT want Americans to go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and REOPEN THE GOVERNMENT,” he added. “Therefore, I have instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible.”
