A prominent voice defending President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration strategy is preparing to leave the administration, a development that is already fueling speculation inside Washington about internal tensions at the Department of Homeland Security.
According to two officials familiar with the situation, Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin is expected to notify colleagues that she is stepping down from her role. Her departure is anticipated next week and comes after months of intense public-facing battles over border enforcement, deportations, and immigration messaging.
McLaughlin currently serves as the chief spokesperson for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and has been one of the most aggressive defenders of the administration’s enforcement posture. She did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Politico regarding her plans.
Throughout some of the administration’s most controversial immigration operations—particularly in Chicago and Minneapolis—McLaughlin emerged as a relentless and unapologetic surrogate. She routinely challenged critics on social media, appeared on cable news, and directly confronted left-wing narratives that painted federal enforcement as extreme or unlawful.
