For years, Beijing has been quietly building a parallel path to the moon, one that now appears dangerously close to overtaking U.S. efforts in one critical area: the lunar south pole.

China’s Silent Advance Toward the Moon

While Washington spent decades shifting priorities, China steadily laid the groundwork for a long-term lunar strategy.

The country has already achieved a historic milestone through its Chang’e program, becoming the first nation to retrieve samples from the far side of the moon. At the same time, it is developing next-generation systems like the Mengzhou and the Lanyue, both designed to support human missions within the next decade.
