Trump’s Push to End Politicization of Law Enforcement
The firings align with executive orders issued by President Trump on his first day back in office, which aimed to dismantle investigations deemed politically motivated. According to Bove’s memo, the DOJ under previous leadership “engaged in a systemic campaign against its perceived political opponents,” leveraging federal agencies to conduct partisan probes, prosecutions, and other legal actions.
“The American people have witnessed the previous administration engage in a systemic campaign against its perceived political opponents, weaponizing the legal force of numerous Federal law enforcement agencies and the Intelligence Community against those perceived political opponents in the form of investigations, prosecutions, civil enforcement actions, and other related actions,” the memo stated. “This includes the FBI.”

Bove went on to emphasize the role of FBI leadership in what President Trump previously described as “a grave national injustice” in relation to the January 6 cases. The document also highlighted concerns over the bureau’s use of security clearance processes as a tool for political retribution, as well as its reluctance to cooperate with Justice Department directives.
More Firings May Be on the Horizon
In addition to the initial terminations, Bove directed Driscoll to produce a list of all FBI personnel who played a role in the investigations of January 6 and another case involving six Hamas leaders charged with orchestrating the October 7 attacks in Israel.
“For each employee included in the list, provide the current title, office to which the person is assigned, role in the investigation or prosecution, and date of last activity relating to the investigation or prosecution,” Bove ordered. “Upon timely receipt of the requested information, the Office of the Deputy Attorney General will commence a review process to determine whether any additional personnel actions are necessary.”
Given the DOJ’s extensive four-year investigation into January 6, this review could lead to hundreds of additional firings. Over 1,600 arrests were made in connection with the protests, and numerous defendants received lengthy sentences for relatively minor offenses such as trespassing. Federal agents carried out armed raids across the country to arrest individuals linked to the protests, further fueling concerns about the weaponization of law enforcement.

Trump: ‘A Good Thing’ for the Country
President Trump addressed the developments on Friday, expressing support for the shake-up at the FBI. “We have some very bad people over there. They came after a lot of people like me, but they came after a lot of people,” Trump stated. “I’ll have to see what is exactly going on after this is finished,” he continued. “But if they fired some people over there, that’s a good thing, because they were very bad. They were very corrupt people, very corrupt, and they hurt our country very badly with the weaponization. They used, they used the Justice Department to go after their political opponent, which in itself is illegal. And obviously it didn’t work.”
As the DOJ review moves forward, more firings and restructuring could follow. This marks the latest in Trump’s ongoing effort to “drain the swamp” and ensure that federal agencies operate without political bias.
