In a shocking upset, Democrat Emily Gregory captured Florida State House District 87, a seat that includes none other than President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. The victory came during Tuesday night’s special election, flipping the district from Republican to Democratic control.
This district was once solidly in GOP hands. In 2024, President Trump carried the area by an 11-point margin, making Gregory’s victory a surprising blow to Republicans in Palm Beach County.
Just one day before the election, President Trump personally endorsed Republican Jon Maples for the seat. In a statement Monday, Trump urged voters:
“There is a very important Special Election tomorrow, Tuesday, March 24th, for Florida State House District 87 in beautiful Palm Beach County — JON MAPLES HAS MY COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENDORSEMENT!”
