President Donald Trump took a major step Tuesday to reshape how federal elections are monitored, signing a far-reaching executive order designed to tighten oversight and strengthen voter verification standards nationwide. The move signals a renewed push to address election integrity concerns, with the administration directing multiple federal agencies to play a more active role in safeguarding the voting process.
The directive, formally titled “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections,” lays out a comprehensive framework that expands coordination between federal authorities and state election officials. It also introduces new rules governing how ballots—particularly mail-in ballots—are issued, handled, and tracked throughout the voting system.
At the heart of the order is a mandate for the Department of Homeland Security, working alongside the Social Security Administration, to assemble and distribute verified citizenship data to state officials. These newly created “State Citizenship Lists” would rely on federal immigration and Social Security records, with regular updates scheduled ahead of federal elections to ensure accuracy.
Administration officials stress that these lists are intended strictly as a verification tool. Being included would not automatically register anyone to vote, as individual states would continue to control their own voter registration systems and procedures under existing laws.
