Local newspaper The Macon Beacon was the first to break the news, reporting the tragic loss on its Facebook page.

“Noxubee County is mourning the death of native son Andrew Eaves. His wife has confirmed reports that he was among the military Blackhawk pilots who died in last night’s crash with an airliner in Washington, D.C. Andrew was a Central Academy graduate who grew up in the Brooksville area,” the post read.

His wife, Carrie Eaves, later confirmed the heartbreaking news in an emotional Facebook post, pleading for privacy and respect in their time of grief.

“I am sure by now all of you have heard the news of the tragedy that has occurred in DC,” she wrote. “My husband was one of the pilots in the Blackhawk. We ask that you pray for our family and friends and for all the other families that are suffering today. We ask for peace while we grieve. Please refrain for negative comments on social media as these families’ children do not need to suffer more pain.”

As the news spread, tributes flooded social media, with friends, former colleagues, and officials honoring Eaves’ service and sacrifice. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves offered his condolences to the Eaves family and others affected by the tragedy.

“Mississippi is mourning the loss of Brooksville native Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves, who was killed in last night’s accident at Reagan National Airport,” Reeves stated. “Elee and I are praying for the victims’ families and first responders who are assisting.”

Friends and fellow servicemembers also shared their sorrow and memories of Eaves, who was described as a dedicated pilot and a true patriot. An Jelica, a former Navy colleague from TACAMO, shared her heartbreak over the news.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the devastating news that my old Navy buddy, Andrew Eaves, was one of the fallen in the D.C. tragedy. My heart aches for his family, who are facing an unimaginable loss. Andrew was a brother, a friend, and a true example of dedication and service.”

Another close friend, Karen King Morris, expressed her deep sorrow and personal connection with Eaves.

“My heart is completely broken! Andrew Eaves, you will be missed by so many. You were like a brother and I love that you share a birthday with my son. We will always celebrate you. You were a hero and a bright light in a dark world!!”
