A growing showdown is brewing inside Washington as House conservatives signal they are prepared to grind the legislative process to a halt unless the Senate advances one of their top election priorities.
U.S. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) delivered a blunt warning over the weekend, saying dozens of House Republicans are ready to block Senate legislation unless the chamber takes serious action on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The bill, which already cleared the House, seeks to strengthen election safeguards by requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration and tightening identity verification standards.
During a Saturday interview with Fox News, Gill made clear that many conservatives believe the Senate is dragging its feet on what they consider a commonsense reform.
The legislation has become a major flashpoint between House conservatives and Senate leadership after Senate Majority Leader John Thune indicated he will not attempt to revive the rarely used “talking filibuster” strategy in order to force a vote that could allow the bill to pass with a simple majority.
For supporters of the SAVE Act, that decision effectively shuts down the most realistic path for the bill to move forward in the Senate.
