A stunning political scandal is unfolding out of Oregon, where a former Democrat county commissioner has reportedly fled the country with her young son to avoid facing trial on serious fraud charges.
Melissa Fireside, 44, a former Clackamas County Commissioner who once positioned herself as a voice for “progressive reform,” is now a wanted fugitive. Authorities say she disappeared with her 9-year-old child after being accused of swindling tens of thousands of dollars from an elderly man — and skipping out on court before her December trial.
Investigators say Fireside pulled her son out of school without authorization last Wednesday and bolted across the southern border. Law enforcement sources believe she’s hiding in Mexico — and may be preparing to continue her escape overseas.
The allegations against Fireside are nothing short of disturbing. Prosecutors say she impersonated her late mother’s 83-year-old boyfriend, Arthur W. Petrone, to steal money through forged financial documents. According to court records, Fireside allegedly used Petrone’s identity to obtain a $21,000 bank loan and a $9,000 credit card cash advance.
