The political clash between Minnesota’s Democratic leadership and the federal government just crossed a dangerous new line.
The U.S. Department of Justice has formally opened a criminal investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, focusing on allegations that both officials interfered with lawful federal immigration enforcement operations.
The probe comes after days of increasingly aggressive rhetoric from Walz and Frey, who have publicly framed Minnesota and the city of Minneapolis as being “at war” with the federal government over immigration policy. That language is now drawing serious scrutiny from federal investigators.

He cautioned that the probe remains in its early stages, adding that it is “early but ongoing.”
