Tim Walz Just Got a Letter He Didn’t Want

“The State of Minnesota has refused to enforce the law, and the consequences are heartbreaking. Americans are watching politicians ignore federal immigration law, criminals attack federal law enforcement, and rioters storm church services. I write to urge a change,” Bondi wrote.

The attorney general did not mince words, accusing Walz and other Minnesota officials of abandoning the men and women sworn to protect the public. She argued that by enacting sanctuary laws and blocking cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the state has left federal officers isolated and exposed.

“Unfortunately, you and other Minnesota officials have refused to support the men and women risking their lives to protect Americans and uphold the rule of law. Because Minnesota, Minneapolis, and St. Paul have chosen to ignore federal immigration law by enacting sanctuary laws and policies, the federal agents led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have operated alone. And politicians in your state are not just refusing to help these agents, they are putting federal agents in danger,” Bondi continued.

Bondi warned that the consequences of these policies are not theoretical—they are real, immediate, and deadly. She called on Walz to act swiftly, stating that cooperation with federal immigration enforcement is essential to restoring order and preventing further bloodshed.

The letter lays out a clear demand to “bring an end to the chaos in Minnesota” and emphasizes that removing criminal illegal aliens from communities “will save lives.” To that end, Bondi outlined three concrete steps she says the governor can take immediately to reverse course.

First, Bondi urged Minnesota to turn over records related to taxpayer-funded welfare programs, including Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. She argued that transparency would allow federal investigators to uncover fraud and abuse, protecting hardworking taxpayers while ensuring benefits reach those who truly qualify.

Second, the attorney general called for a full repeal of sanctuary policies at both the state and local level. She stressed that detention facilities must work with ICE, honor immigration detainers, and allow federal officers access to individuals already in custody. Bondi warned that blocking cooperation only pushes dangerous encounters out of secure facilities and into neighborhoods and city streets.

Third, Bondi demanded access to Minnesota’s voter rolls under the authority of the Civil Rights Act of 1960. She said allowing the Department of Justice to review voter registration practices is a commonsense step toward ensuring election integrity and restoring public trust.

Bondi said she is confident that these actions would “help bring back law and order to Minnesota and improve the lives of Americans.”

In closing, the attorney general delivered a blunt warning—and an invitation.

“The time has come for state and local officials in your state to change course. As the chief law enforcement officer of the United States, I am committed to enforcing federal immigration laws and keeping every American safe. Minnesota can and should be a partner with this administration. Do not obstruct federal immigration enforcement; do not allow rioters to take over the streets and houses of worship; do not hinder federal officials from investigating financial fraud and violations of election laws. Whether state and local politicians stand in the way or not, we will work every day to protect Americans and make Minnesota Safe Again. I request that you join us in that effort.”

Meanwhile, tensions in Minneapolis remain high. Left-wing activists have continued to clash with police, with some declaring so-called “autonomous zones” where law enforcement is unwelcome. For many Americans, the situation has become a stark example of what happens when ideology overrides public safety—and when elected officials refuse to enforce the law.
