In a stunning political upset, New York City has elected one of the youngest and most left-wing mayors in its history.
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic socialist and Queens state assemblyman, emerged victorious in Tuesday’s mayoral race, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.¹
Mamdani’s campaign promised sweeping free services for residents, including free public transportation, childcare, city-run grocery stores, and frozen rents.² To fund these initiatives, he plans to raise taxes on corporations and anyone earning over $1 million.³
Among his most ambitious goals are a $30 minimum wage by 2030 and a freeze on rent for rent-stabilized apartments.⁴ During his victory speech, he referenced socialist icon Eugene Debs, who ran for president five times in the early 20th century.⁵
