Chicago’s powerful teachers union found time last week to stage a political spectacle inside a Target store. What it did not find time to do is fix a school system where the majority of students still cannot read or do basic math.

Viral videos circulated showing members of the Chicago Teachers Union marching into a Target location, holding anti-ICE signs, and confronting retail workers during their shifts. The employees were not policymakers. They were hourly staff trying to get through the day.
Yet union activists chose them as props in a political protest.
The incident raised eyebrows nationwide, but the context makes it even worse. Only 43 percent of Chicago students in grades three through eight are reading at grade level. Math scores are even more alarming, with just 27 percent meeting basic standards.
