In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court handed former President Donald Trump a decisive win, even drawing support from justices typically aligned with liberal views. The court overturned a lower court injunction that had blocked the administration from ending the protected legal status of hundreds of thousands of migrants living in the U.S.
The decision was overwhelming, 8–1 in favor of the Trump administration’s position. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, appointed by President Joe Biden, stood alone in dissent.
“The decision clears the way for the Trump administration to move forward with its plans to terminate Biden-era Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protections for roughly 300,000 Venezuelan migrants living in the U.S. and allows the administration to move forward with plans to immediately remove these migrants, which lawyers for the administration argued they should be able to do,” the report explained.
U.S. Solicitor General John Sauer argued forcefully before the Supreme Court that the lower court had exceeded its authority.
