Democrats just can’t seem to keep their story straight. On Monday, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) let slip what many conservatives suspected all along — that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s real shutdown plan was political theater designed to hurt working families and score partisan points.
During a moment of rare honesty on the Senate floor, Durbin, who serves as the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, openly admitted that his party’s “shutdown strategy” came at the expense of Americans’ livelihoods — including the food on children’s tables.
After 40 grueling days of a government shutdown that crippled federal operations and left countless families struggling, eight Democrat senators finally caved under pressure and joined Republicans in a late-night vote to advance legislation to reopen the government.
Among those breaking ranks with Schumer were Senators Angus King (I-ME), John Fetterman (D-PA), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Jacky Rosen (D-NM), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Dick Durbin (D-IL).
