Democrats, who just celebrated strong performances in this week’s special elections, now appear eager to “end” the government shutdown they conveniently allowed to drag on right through Election Day. Their sudden rush to the negotiating table seems a little too well-timed — almost like the chaos was part of the plan all along.

Democrats Benefit from Crisis Politics

Over the past week, Democrats won key victories in Virginia and New Jersey and made progress in California redistricting battles. Their message discipline and media support helped them spin the government standoff as Republican “dysfunction.” Now, just days after those wins, Schumer is presenting what looks like an olive branch — but in reality, it’s a setup for the 2026 midterms.

As Punchbowl News reporter Andrew Desiderio revealed, Schumer introduced a proposal that he described as a “reasonable offer” to end the shutdown. But as Desiderio noted, “Republicans are almost certain to reject it. One R just noted that all this does is force Congress to address it around the midterms next year.” He continued, “Dream scenario for Dems to be able to talk about health care right before the elections.”
