RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel encouraged former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley to withdraw from the Republican presidential contest on Tuesday night, citing her lack of confidence in her ability to defeat President Donald Trump and her need to “reflect” on her candidacy. In an interview with Fox News, McDaniel stated that the electorate’s message is that the party must “unite around our eventual nominee which is gonna be Donald Trump.”

Haley vows to continue competing.
Delegate assignments will be decided by next GOP ballots; the Nevada caucus is scheduled on February 8. Haley isn’t included as a contender, though. According to a recent survey by Trump’s pollster Tony Fabrizio, Haley is lagging Trump by a substantial 40 points in the South Carolina primary on February 24.

McDaniel recommends a vice presidential contender for Trump who can win over independent voters in pivotal states like New Hampshire, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Ohio as well as expand the party’s base of support beyond Republicans. They do, however, stress how crucial it is to pick a presidential candidate who can hold the office and win the president’s confidence.
