Air Force One’s engines had barely warmed up before the unexpected happened: President Donald Trump’s aircraft abruptly reversed course in the air and headed back toward Joint Base Andrews.
According to the White House pool traveling with the president, the crew detected a “minor electrical issue” shortly after takeoff while Trump was en route to the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, Switzerland. Rather than gamble with even a small mechanical problem, the decision was made to turn the plane around as a precaution.
That sudden pivot set off a fast-moving chain reaction on the ground. Within minutes, a camera caught a federal motorcade flying down the road toward Joint Base Andrews, clearly scrambling to get the president and his staff reorganized as quickly as possible.
Even the White House press team couldn’t resist a little humor amid the chaos. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reportedly cracked a joke that the Qatari jet Trump was offered sounded “much better” at the time—an offhand remark that quickly made the rounds as reporters watched schedules and timelines fall apart.
Trump and his team prepared to continue the trip on a different aircraft, but the delay instantly raised questions about how much time the president would lose ahead of a major global event where every hour is tightly choreographed. He was expected back at Joint Base Andrews by 11 p.m., though it wasn’t immediately clear how long the delay would push back his arrival in Switzerland.
