That single post reignited a political firestorm.
The White House Rapid Response team followed up, directly confronting Omar on X:
“Why did you marry your brother?”
Omar snapped back and called the attention “creepy,” but once again dodged the actual allegations.
A Paper Trail That Never Disappeared
The details surrounding Omar’s marriages have raised questions for years — questions she never truly answered. Public records show that in February 2009, she legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Both listed the same address. The ceremony wasn’t conducted by an imam, as one might expect, but by a Christian minister — a detail that confused even members of Omar’s own community.
At the time, Omar already had a long-standing religious marriage with Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she shared children. She insists they “separated” shortly before her legal marriage to Elmi. However, public housing and court records tell a very different story. Documents tie Omar and Hirsi to the same Minneapolis address for years — including during the period she was legally married to Elmi.
So while Omar was legally tied to Elmi, she appeared to continue living with Hirsi. That contradiction has never been explained.
A Whistleblower From Within the Somali Community Speaks Out
The situation escalated dramatically in 2020 when Abdihakim Osman, a Minneapolis community member who knew Omar personally, came forward with bombshell claims.
According to Osman, both Omar and Hirsi openly referred to Elmi as Omar’s brother when he came to Minneapolis. He stated:
“[Hirsi] and Ilhan both told me it was Ilhan’s brother and he had been living in London but he was mixing with what were seen as bad influences that the family did not like.”
Osman added:
“She said she needed to get papers for her brother to go to school.”
He also described how Omar’s traditional 2002 wedding to Hirsi drew over 100 guests, but the 2009 marriage to Elmi was hidden from everyone. As Osman put it:
“No one knew there had been a wedding until the media turned up the marriage certificate years later.”
The Overlooked Tax Fraud
While the marriage controversy dominates headlines, Omar’s tax filings reveal a more concrete legal violation. According to the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board, she filed joint tax returns with Hirsi in both 2014 and 2015 — even though she was still legally married to Elmi. That’s a federal felony.
She didn’t finalize her divorce from Elmi until 2019.
Worse, during those divorce proceedings she swore under oath that she had “no contact” with Elmi after 2011. But social media posts from 2015 show her smiling alongside Elmi during a trip to London. That’s perjury — another federal crime.
Democrats Cornered as Trump Forces the Issue
Trump’s decision to shine a spotlight back on the scandal puts Democrats in a no-win situation. Defend Omar, and they stand behind someone with documented tax violations and contradictory marital records. Remain silent, and they abandon one of their most high-profile progressive allies.
The Star Tribune previously attempted to verify Elmi’s identity and hit a brick wall, admitting:
“We could neither conclusively confirm nor rebut the allegation that he is Omar’s sibling.”
Omar provided documents to reporters but refused to allow copies — another red flag.
If she truly wanted to put this controversy to rest, she could release her full records. The fact that she won’t speaks volumes.
Trump’s Move Shifts the Political Ground
By resurfacing the scandal, Trump reminded the nation of something Omar’s critics have long argued: the cover-up looks worse than the original allegations. And now that the issue is back in the headlines, Omar’s wall of silence is cracking.
Whether Democrats like it or not, the controversy they hoped was buried is alive again — and this time, Trump is making sure it stays that way.
