American freestyle skiers set off a political firestorm over the weekend after publicly expressing discomfort with representing the United States on the world stage—comments that many conservatives viewed as deeply disrespectful to the country whose flag they voluntarily wear.
What should have been a routine media appearance instead turned into a self-inflicted controversy, as two Team USA athletes used the spotlight to air grievances about America itself rather than focusing on competition, country, or gratitude for the opportunity they’ve been given.
Freestyle skier Hunter Hess sparked the backlash first with remarks that immediately raised eyebrows.
“It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now, I think. It’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren’t,”
Hess went on to distance himself from the nation he represents, suggesting his participation is conditional rather than patriotic.
