New Poll Shows Voters Want Congress To Stop Hiring Of 87,000 New IRS Agents

The majority of Americans have a common, partisan dislike of the appointment of 87,000 additional IRS agents. This agreement among prospective general election voters, indicated in a recent Convention of States Action/Trafalgar survey, supports the need for Congress to act on the matter.

The Family and Small Business Taxpayer Protection Act, which had strong support from voters in a recent survey, was approved by House Republicans on January 9. Respondents overwhelmingly approved of the idea of stopping the employment of new IRS agents via the Democrat-led funding plan for 2022. The results were an astonishing 60% to 28%, demonstrating widespread support for this legislative action among Americans.

For the IRS, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 marked a turning point as it provided approximately $80 billion in extra money to create over 86,000 full-time workers by the year 2031. There is little question that this significant investment will pay off both now and in the future.

With a narrow majority opposed, Democratic voters were split on the House’s decision to employ 87,000 more IRS officers. Meanwhile, the proposal received support from 88.4% of Republicans and 61.4% of independents, respectively.

“This data shows the public–regardless of party–is overwhelmingly supportive of the measure forwarded by the House of Representatives to get this reversed,” Mark Meckler, president of the Convention of States, remarked.

The GOP has harshly criticized the IRS’s recruiting procedures. Rep. Buddy Carter introduced legislation that would have replaced income taxes with a national sales tax in an effort to overturn this system. Politico adds that the House Select Subcommittee on Weaponization will further probe the agency in the following months for any possible abuses or anomalies within its operations. Given recent occurrences, friction between Republicans and Democrats is at an all-time high.
