By designating gun violence as a public health emergency, Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham takes a brave stance. A thirteen-year-old girl, a five-year-old girl, and an eleven-year-old boy were tragically shot to death.
Concerning about this public health order is the temporary suspension of open and concealed carry laws in Bernalillo County. It immediately affects law-abiding citizens’ constitutional right to keep and bear arms. According to the Governor, there are exemptions for certified security guards and law enforcement personnel.
“The action plan includes a suspension of open and concealed carry laws in Bernalillo County, temporarily prohibiting the carrying of guns on public property with certain exceptions. Exceptions include for licensed security guards and law enforcement officers. Citizens with permits to carry firearms are free to possess their weapons on private property (such as at a gun range or gun store), provided they transport the firearm in a locked box, use a trigger lock, or some other mechanism that renders the gun incapable of being fired,” as per the press announcement.
The public health order also includes the following directives:
- The Regulation and Licensing Division will check authorized firearm dealers on a regular basis to make sure they are adhering to all sales and storage regulations.
- In order to find illegal chemicals, including fentanyl, the Department of Health will test wastewater at schools in collaboration with the Department of the Environment.
- A comprehensive report on people who suffer from gunshot wounds and visit hospitals will be written and published by the New Mexico Department of Health. The victims’ age, gender, race, and ethnicity, as well as statistics on their medical outcomes, will all be covered in this report. The type and size of the weapon used, the circumstances leading to the injury, and the effect of these gunshot victims on the New Mexico healthcare system will also be covered in detail. Additionally, the report will contain any additional pertinent data.
- Guns are not permitted on state property, including buildings, schools, and kid-friendly areas, in order to maintain safety.
- Due to financing for overtime, the State Police force in Albuquerque will now have more personnel.

- The Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative will be put on hold while a full assessment of juvenile probation procedures is carried out by the Children, Youth, and Families Department.
“As I said yesterday, the time for standard measures has passed,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in a statement. “And when New Mexicans are afraid to be in crowds, to take their kids to school, to leave a baseball game – when their very right to exist is threatened by the prospect of violence at every turn – something is very wrong.”
The state’s governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, voiced worry about the major difficulties that the limits would bring.
“I welcome the debate and fight about how to make New Mexicans safer,” during a press conference, she said.
A gutsy reporter confronted Grisham about his ridiculous order.
Reporter: The instances you gave were criminal behavior, like kids firing at one another from moving cars. It is debatable whether civic order is important in light of these instances. Wouldn’t concentrating on enhancing law enforcement be more effective?
Grisham: This order is worth three times as much. First of all, it makes clear that this is a statewide problem and urges everyone to use their resources wisely and capture suspects. Secondly, this order asks for more resources and arrests everywhere since different jurisdictions tackle the problem with various levels of restrictions from the Department of Justice. Thirdly, it sends a signal to organizations like the Metropolitan Detention Center and HMOs to put treatment first and deal with the problem squarely. It’s time to stop the inaction and move forward. However, it is crucial to recognize that the vast quantity of participants makes it impractical to apprehend everyone.
Reporter: Albuquerque residents with concealed carry permits can stroll around without worrying about being detained.
Grisham: Perhaps it’s time to take into account that they ought to be. The most important thing to remember is that I’m dedicated to using all of my resources and sound reasoning to address a troubling situation. It is really unnerving that people openly carry weapons in public in many New Mexico communities, whether on their waist or belt. I want to be clear that young people should never be permitted to own a weapon.
Reporter: This constitutes a crime already.
What if we could preserve this principle in an ideal world, Grisham asked in his scenario? Although it might not be possible to seize every single one of them, it would allow police personnel to focus their efforts on capturing the real criminals.
Reporter: Given that you took an oath to preserve the Constitution, isn’t it illegal to limit your capacity to use your carry license?
Grisham: I feel I have the authority to exercise extra powers, unless there is an emergency and I have declared a brief state of emergency. However, I don’t think any constitutional right, including the one I took under oath, is unassailable. During a crisis, my personal freedoms and the right to free speech are restricted. The bereaved parents and the victims of catastrophes like the current one involving an eleven-year-old deserve to talk about how to make emergency situations safer. Their fundamental rights must also be taken into account. I vowed to defend those rights, and if we fail to address this pressing issue and take decisive action, all other citizens’ rights will be subordinated to theirs. In my opinion, this shouldn’t be the case.
Reporter: Hold on a moment, you’re discussing crimes. We already have laws in place to address these offenses.
Grisham: But who is arguing for the defense of that right if I am in danger? Someone needs to intervene if this wave of criminality is allowed to go unchecked. I’m contributing in every way I can with what I know and can do.
Reporter: Do you believe that this message will prevent criminals from using firearms on Albuquerque’s streets for the next month?
Grisham: No.
WATCH:
The broad public health order that Governor Grisham issued for Bernalillo County ignores the underlying causes of drug use and gun violence while violating the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding residents. The idea that these violent acts are committed by lawful gun owners is unsupported by any data. Instead, those who rely on their Second Amendment rights for personal security are disproportionately affected by this ruling, which could put them in risk.

Another example of how clueless some folks are about guns. This restriction will do absolutely nothing to prevent future shootings! It will only make it less safe for law-abiding citizens. If more good people were armed, there would be less crime! More guns – Less Crime! Always, in fact!
TRUE THEY NEED TO GET THE ILLEGAL GUNS OFF THE STREETS
And another Brain Dead Politician gives a distorted illusion of what the problem really is!
When will these idiots have what would be an epiphany for them; because, obviously they are incapable of normal thinking that those that legally carry fire arms, are not the ones that are causing these tragic outcomes! Furthermore, I’d like to know her position on de-funding the appropriate authorities. If it’s the same as the insane like the former mayor of Chicago, then what can I say. We have IDIOTS in our government because IDIOTS have voted for them.
I rest my case and leave it to the rest of you to decide…VOTE!
