According to reports, the operation featured about 40 undercover officers or informants who extensively observed the defendants’ conduct. Roots said, “Some of these undercover Metro officers marched with the Proud Boy march, and some appear to have played roles of instigators, in that they are seen on body-worn videos chanting ‘Go! The FBI and other government organizations have both infiltrated The Proud Boys. It has come to light that at least two additional organizations had more covert operatives, informants, and confidential human sources (CHS) than the eight the FBI publicly acknowledged. The breadth of the government’s oversight of extremist groups is coming into more focus.
During the Capitol Riots, the MPD and HSI both had a sizable number of plainclothes agents and CHSs, respectively. On camera and even in private texts, shocking proof of plainclothes MPD operatives allegedly inciting the populace to attack the Capitol has surfaced. These facts demonstrate a worrying amount of undercover agents’ involvement in the activities that took place on that tragic day.
In the January 6th case, the defense attorneys contend that the government withheld vital material that would have aided in the development of their defense tactics. If the defense had been made aware of the clandestine actions sooner, they may have had a significant influence on the case. The Proud Boys’ opinion on antifa before the events of that tragic day is now being clarified in light of the recently revealed information. The government is being charged by the defense attorneys with concealing evidence that may clear them, and the implications of this newly discovered information could be significant.
The legal team contends that they have a right to full disclosure regarding any covert agents from Homeland Security Investigations who may have been present at the Capitol protests on January 6th and may have been implanted with the Proud Boys and other groups.
