Israel has announced a swift military response after what officials described as yet another series of ceasefire violations by Hamas. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed the Israel Defense Forces to “carry out immediate and powerful strikes in the Gaza Strip,” his office said Tuesday — a clear signal that Israel views these incidents as more than isolated skirmishes and is prepared to hit back hard.
Israeli reports say the latest breach occurred in the southern city of Rafah, where fighting has intensified in recent weeks. Media outlets noted that two IDF soldiers were killed earlier this month in the area, and initial accounts indicate an anti-tank missile was fired at Israeli troops, escalating tensions and prompting the order for a forceful response.
Beyond the battlefield confrontations, outrage in Israel has surged over what families and officials call deliberate deceptions by Hamas surrounding the return of remains. On Monday, Hamas announced it had turned over the remains of a thirteenth hostage. Israeli authorities, however, concluded the group only handed over partial remains of Ofir Tzarfati — remains that, in fact, had been recovered by the IDF back in December 2023.
Grief-stricken relatives say those actions crossed a moral line. Hamas allegedly staged a staged discovery — a filmed sequence in which operatives removed what they claimed were remains from a Gaza City building, buried them in a hole they had prepared, then later “uncovered” and presented them in front of Red Cross witnesses. Families call the episode a grotesque manipulation that exploits their pain for propaganda.
