Democratic Party unity is starting to show cracks — and the first major fracture may be forming around House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
A new Axios report reveals that dozens of Democratic candidates running for Congress in 2026 are refusing to commit to backing Jeffries for leadership, with some openly declaring they will not support him at all. The findings mark one of the first visible signs of rebellion against the man who has led House Democrats since 2022 — and it’s coming from inside his own party.
Dems Turn on Their Own Leader
Out of 113 Democratic candidates contacted by Axios, only 24 said they would “definitely” vote for Jeffries, while 7 said they were “likely” to do so. The rest — a stunning 82 candidates — either refused to commit or flat-out said no. Twenty declared they would not support Jeffries, and another five said they were “likely” to oppose him. That’s more than a quarter of all respondents already leaning against the Democratic leader.
The numbers paint a picture of growing dissatisfaction among the party’s base, particularly on its left flank. Many of those who withheld support said they were frustrated by what they described as weak messaging, a lack of bold leadership, and Jeffries’ unwillingness to stand up to Republicans or embrace progressive priorities.
