The best course of action, according to the state of Michigan, is to let the people sort it out for themselves.
Really?
The state Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s Office of Global Michigan issued a statement on February 12th urging citizens to offer their time to “sponsor” refugees.
“Sponsors are expected to provide support to newly arrived refugees for 90 days through acts such as greeting refugee newcomers at the airport, securing and preparing initial housing, enrolling children in school and helping adults find employment,” the statement said.
Michigan is just requesting that individuals “secure and prepare initial housing,” not that they should welcome illegal immigrants. However, some blue states have taken a more direct approach.
Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll of Massachusetts was blunt last year, asking locals, “If you have an extra room or suite in your home, please consider hosting a family. Housing and shelter is our most pressing need.”
It’s hard to picture a large number of individuals seizing the opportunity to look after undocumented immigrants they’ve never met.
