Former First Lady Michelle Obama is once again generating headlines, but not for reasons her publishers were hoping. During a high-profile promotional stop for her newest book “The Look,” Obama unleashed a pointed and inflammatory rant targeting white Americans, stunning many who tuned into the event expecting a harmless discussion on fashion and self-image.
The event, held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, was marketed as a friendly conversation on “beauty, culture and confidence” between Obama and actress Tracee Ellis Ross. Instead, it veered sharply into territory that left viewers questioning why the former First Lady continues to portray racial grievances as the defining lens for American life.
Obama’s book recounts her wardrobe and appearance choices from her husband’s early political days through her years in the White House. But the conversation took a drastic turn when she suddenly began lecturing white Americans about Black hair, beauty norms and cultural expectations.
“Let me explain something to white people. Our hair comes out of our head naturally in a curly pattern. So when we’re straightening it to follow your beauty standards, we are trapped by the straightness,” Obama declared. Her comments drew loud reactions online, especially after she escalated her claims even further.
