New York’s radical left is in full panic mode after a resurfaced interview from over a decade ago revealed what many voters are now calling the truth about socialist mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani — that even his own mother doesn’t consider him an American.
“He Is Not an American at All”
In a 2013 interview with Hindustan Times, filmmaker Mira Nair described her son in terms that are now igniting a political firestorm. Speaking proudly about her then–college-aged son, Nair said, “He is a total desi. Completely. We are not firangs at all. He is very much us. He is not an Uhmericcan (American) at all. He was born in Uganda, raised between India and America. He is at home in many places. He thinks of himself as a Ugandan and as an Indian.”
The comments might have sounded harmless to Nair, but to many Americans, they’re a slap in the face.
In Hindi and Urdu, the word “firang” refers to foreigners — typically Westerners — but it often carries a mocking, exclusionary tone. And when used in the context of one’s own child growing up in America, critics say it sends a chilling message.
