Major Change To Twitter’s Political Advertising Policy

Under the guidance of CEO Elon Musk, Twitter is bringing back its political ad policy after a three-year suspension in an effort to boost income in the wake of its purchase last year. “Today, we’re relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US,” it said. “We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks.

“Moving forward, we will align our advertising policy with that of TV and other media outlets. As with all policy changes, we will first ensure that our approach to reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter.”

The bold decision to outlaw all political advertising was taken by Twitter in 2019 in response to rising concerns about false information being shared on the network. This project demonstrated a proactive commitment to user protection and campaign integrity on social media.

The CEO of a significant corporation at the time, Jack Dorsey, said that although online advertisements are unquestionably effective tools for commercial organizations to employ in promotions and marketing initiatives, “that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.”

With the most recent ruling, the rule that forbade political campaign or party advertisements was abandoned in a significant manner. Government representatives who have been elected or appointed may now place advertisements on this platform.

Despite being a hot topic during the 2018 U.S. midterm elections, political advertising only made up a relatively tiny fraction of Twitter’s total income for the whole election period—under $3 million.
