A crucial election dispute in the campaign for governor of Arizona is being heard in court after a judge refused to throw out Republican Kari Lake’s case. Future state politics may be significantly impacted by this next trial.

Kelly Townsend Lake, a Republican running for the Senate, was allowed access to the votes on Friday as part of her legal challenge against the results of the November election. Three of the four motions submitted by Lake’s attorneys were granted by Judge Peter Thompson, allowing them access to review 50 randomly selected votes as she pursues an official victory against Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs. “ballot on demand” 50 early ballots cast from the 50 printed votes cast on Election Day, plus “six separate Maricopa County batches,” plus an additional 50 randomly selected votes printed on demand that were labeled as spoilt.

“This is a pretty significant factual hearing, your honor,” said Blehm.
“Judge Peter Thompson said he did have some concerns about timing. He scheduled two hours on Monday for oral arguments for the motions to dismiss and set a two-day hearing scheduled for later next week. There appears to be major interest in the case. Tuesday’s hearing was delayed by about half an hour because so many members of the public were trying to log into the virtual courtroom,” reported KJZZ.
Fields Moseley, a spokesperson for Maricopa County, stressed Maricopa’s commitment to making sure that every qualified voter gets the chance to have their opinion heard while expressing his confidence in the legal system to address allegations. He supported this with a statement from Reuters guaranteeing that fairness would be upheld while administering the 2022 General Election.
“We’ll take it all the way to the Supreme Court if we have to. We will not stop fighting,” she said.
Earlier this year, District of Arizona Judge John Tuchi rendered a significant decision, tossing out a lawsuit and subsequently fining the lawyers for Republican Secretary of State nominee Mark Finchem.
“Imposing sanctions, in this case, is not to ignore the importance of putting in place procedures to ensure that our elections are secure and reliable,” Tuchi put his order in writing.
“It is to make clear that the Court will not condone litigants ignoring the steps that Arizona has already taken toward this end and furthering false narratives that baselessly undermine public trust at a time of increasing disinformation about, and distrust in, the democratic process.
