Johnson Crushes Schumer: DHS Shutdown Chaos!

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is ratcheting up the pressure on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Senate Democrats as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown stretches into its sixth week with no resolution in sight.

House Republicans are planning a vote Thursday on two measures designed to put Democrats in a politically tight spot amid the ongoing stalemate.

The first is a funding bill that would keep DHS fully operational through the end of the fiscal year on September 30. This marks the third time the House has moved to pass DHS funding after Democrats walked out en masse earlier this year to protest President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

The second effort is a nonbinding resolution spearheaded by Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-Pa., which formally honors the work of all DHS agencies.

The timing couldn’t be more critical. The DHS shutdown, now at 38 days, is wreaking havoc on air travel nationwide. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staffing shortages are creating massive delays at airports in Houston, New Orleans, New York City, and beyond, with agents calling in sick amid the uncertainty.
