For years, Democrats insisted they would never weaponize a government shutdown against everyday Americans. That promise has now come under scrutiny as tens of thousands of frontline workers found themselves caught in the middle of a political standoff.
Roughly 60,000 TSA agents went without pay for more than 45 days during the recent shutdown, creating hardship for workers tasked with keeping the nation’s airports secure. At the same time, controversy erupted over political alliances that critics say raise serious questions about judgment and priorities within the party.
One of the most striking flashpoints involves commentator Hasan Piker, whose past statements have resurfaced in a major way. Piker has made a series of remarks that have drawn widespread condemnation. Among them: he said America deserved 9/11, referred to religious Jews as “inbred,” claimed Hamas is “a thousand times better” than Israel, and dismissed concerns about atrocities during the October 7 attacks. When confronted by Brad Schneider, he fired back by calling critics “AIPAC dogs.”
Despite these controversies, Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has appeared alongside Piker on the campaign trail in Michigan. Prominent Democrats such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Ro Khanna have also engaged with him through media appearances, fueling criticism from both sides of the aisle.
