House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Monday declared he will oppose a Republican-sponsored spending bill designed to reopen the federal government, signaling yet another partisan showdown as the shutdown stretches into its second month.
The legislation, which cleared the Senate late Sunday with a 60–40 vote and some bipartisan support, was expected to mark a path toward ending the shutdown that began November 1. Yet Jeffries made it clear that House Democrats will stand against it, arguing the measure fails to meet key Democratic priorities.
Despite Jeffries’ opposition, the bill still has a strong chance of passing the House, where Republicans hold a majority. If approved, it would move to President Donald Trump’s desk for signing, potentially ending the government closure.
On Monday, Jeffries also expressed support for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), backing his Senate colleague even as some far-left Democrats grow increasingly frustrated with the compromise deal aimed at reopening the government.
