Enrique Tarrio, the Proud Boys’ leader, was given a record-breaking 22-year prison term for his participation in the January 6 Capitol demonstrations. Tarrio has been found guilty of “seditious conspiracy” despite not actually entering the US Capitol. The sentence imposed on this prisoner stemming from the January 6 incident is the longest ever.
Tarrio’s co-defendants Joe Biggs, Zachary Rehl, and Ethan Nordean received terms ranging from 15 to 18 years in jail, but federal prosecutors sought a heavy 33-year prison term for Tarrio.

“We need to make sure the consequences are abundantly clear to anyone who might be unhappy with the results of 2024, 2028, 2032 or any future election for as long as this case is remembered,” Conor Mulroe, the prosecutor, said. “This was a calculated act of terrorism.”
On January 6, independent reporter Tarrio was not anywhere near the Capitol. As a result of allegations that he had burned a BLM banner in December 2020, he was already in detention.
“I am not a political zealot. Inflicting harm or changing the results of the election was not my goal,” At his sentencing hearing, Tarrio remarked. “Please show me mercy,” he added.
Judge Timothy Kelly of the U.S. District Court agrees with the prosecution, classifying Tarrio’s activities as “terrorism” and granting enhanced sentences for terrorist offenses.
The majority of the almost 1,300 people detained for their involvement in the Capitol disturbances on January 6 were charged with false trespassing. The FBI continues to follow these intruders assiduously even after two years in an effort to imprison them for decades.
