Who Was He Really?
Media outlets rushed to describe Villegas-Gonzalez as a “Michigan man” and quoted his girlfriend and stepdaughter calling him “a fun guy” who “respected people.” But that narrative leaves out the truth. He wasn’t a Michigan native. He was an illegal alien from Michoacán, Mexico – a cartel stronghold plagued by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and La Nueva Familia Michoacana (LNFM).
He had been in the United States illegally for more than 20 years and already had a reckless driving conviction. No amount of glowing character references can erase the fact that he tried to kill a federal officer with his car.
Political Spin and Protests
The shooting took place during “Operation Midway Blitz,” a large ICE enforcement push in the Chicago area involving hundreds of agents. Almost immediately, protests erupted. Politicians and activists wasted no time politicizing the event.
Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker demanded investigations. Pritzker claimed, “the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability.” State Rep. Norma Hernandez went even further, declaring: “Trump and ICE have created this chaos and now deathly consequences to their policies.”
The Legal Reality
These talking points collapse under scrutiny. Traffic stops fall under the well-established “vehicle exception” to the Fourth Amendment. ICE agents are legally allowed to stop and detain individuals based on reasonable suspicion of immigration violations – no warrant required.
As for claims that Villegas-Gonzalez had “just dropped off two children at a local school,” that is irrelevant. There is no law that shields someone from arrest because they are transporting kids. Furthermore, taxpayers were footing the bill for those children’s education despite their father not contributing local property taxes.
The Taxpayer Burden
Activists often argue that illegal aliens contribute to society through sales taxes, rent, or ITIN filings. The truth is far different. Less than one percent of illegal aliens pay payroll or income taxes through ITINs. Sales taxes apply to everyone, citizen or not, and in most states they do not fund schools. Public schools are overwhelmingly funded through local property taxes – something illegal aliens do not pay unless they own property.
That means every time an illegal alien enrolls a child in school, local taxpayers are left footing the bill.
The Hard Truth
This tragic encounter wasn’t caused by ICE. It wasn’t caused by Trump. It was caused by Villegas-Gonzalez, who ignored lawful commands, used his car as a weapon, and dragged an officer down the road. Under standard use-of-force rules, the officer’s decision to fire was justified. Faced with imminent death or grave injury, he had no choice.
Instead of condemning this violent criminal, Democrats are trying to score political points. But the facts are simple: this death never would have happened if Villegas-Gonzalez had respected the law and left the country when he was supposed to.
A Clear Solution
Liberals claim to be outraged by enforcement operations like this, but there is an obvious solution. The Trump administration’s self-deportation program offers illegal aliens $1,000 and a free ticket home, with the chance to reapply legally later. Instead of resisting arrest, dragging officers, and sparking chaos, they could leave voluntarily.
This entire episode is a stark reminder: immigration laws exist for a reason. Tragedies like this one only happen when those laws are ignored.
